GRAVE INJUSTICE!
When the Director of Behavioral Clinic School of Veterinarian Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Karen Overall, DVM, was interviewed on the 20/20 TV program, she stated, "95% of the 12 million dogs that are euthanized every year due to behavioral problems could be saved if there was a solution." (11,400,000 innocent dogs)
One of the behavioral problems is separation anxiety where the dog becomes destructive when left alone. In this connection, Dr. Nicholas Dodman, Professor of Clinical Studies at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine, states, "40% of the visits to the vet (by dog owners) exhibit this serious problem." There are 55 million dogs in the U.S.
The FDA solution was to approve the drug Clomicalm for anxious canines and also a disclaimer: "Used alone, this drug won't work."
There is a non-clinical, drugless solution that has saved the lives of approximately 3,000 behavioral problem dogs (failing with only 3) since 1963 with symptoms ranging from Separation Anxiety to Rage Syndrome and everything in between. The solution is to understand and change the cause which then alters the effect.
EUTHANIZING
The cost to destroy 'Man's Best Friend' is $98 for each dog. That includes the required 6 to 8 day boarding and the disposal of the body. . . . Sonoma County Animal Control, Feb./2000.
MONEY WASTED TO WASTE LIFE
$1,117,200,000
$1,117,200,000 is the cost to exterminate the 11,400,000 dogs (they're only victims) that could have been saved.
There is another price that very few care to talk about. It's the mental and emotional stress that the compassionate staff and volunteers go through every day -- the daily ritual of caring and giving affection to an animal in the morning and later in the same day, have to take its life. This creates a Chronic Stress Syndrome and causes shelter members to
experience various illnesses including (recorded) suicide.
THE SOLUTION IS EDUCATION NOT ERADICATION
