DOG BITE EPIDEMIC
In 1991 there were 1.6 million dog bites reported by the U.S. Disease Control.
300% INCREASE
In 1994 there were 4.7 million dog bites reported of which 3,196,000 (68%) were suffered by children. This averages out to 391,667 per month or 13,056 per day. According to Dr. Randall Lockwood, Director of the Humane Society in Washington, D.C., "These figures for dog bites can be increased 20 to 40 times for those bites that are not
reported."
DOG BITE FATALITIES
In 1989 there were 12 fatalities reported due to dog bites.
- Five (5) were children: ages - 2 years (1), 3 years (3), 5 years (1).
- Seven (7) were adults.
In 1990 there were 25 fatalities reported due to dog bites.
- Sixteen (16) were children: ages - 5 days (1), 6 days (1), 14 days (1), 28 days (1), one month (2), 2 months (1), 6 months (1), 18 months (2), 2-1/2 years (1), 3 years (1), 4 years (1), 5 years (1), 10 years (1).
- Nine (9) were adults.
In 1995 there were an estimated 32 dog bite fatalities reported.
- Twenty (20) were children: ages - 30 days (3), 5 months (1), 1-4 years (10), 5-11 years (6).
- Twelve (12) were adults.
Dog bite fatalities are now averaging two (2) per month, mainly children.
